Is Countrywide's CEO Floating Away in a Multi-Million Dollar Dinghy While the Ship Sinks?
Typically, at least how it is supposed to be, the Captain will go down with his ship. However, that seems to be changing as more and more CEOs through the years have been taking their money and floating away from their ships in million dollar "dinghies". Mozilo will certainly not be seen as the first, though there is speculation that he violated the law in the process.
Countrywide is certainly not out the woods, yet. When companies are in trouble, the employees look to their CEO and upper managers for leadership. What are they supposed to think when their "Captain" is "jumping ship"? At Countrywide, employees must be wondering how bad it really is when their CEO is dumping all the stock he can, over $130 million worth (and counting).
It certainly does not bode well that Countrywide's funding fell 44%. It certainly does not bode well that they acquired a lot of debt a couple of months ago (over $11.5B).
Will they stay afloat? Time will tell, but if the CEO's actions are a sign, chances are the ship is breaking up.
